What is SEO? What is the difference to SEM & SEA?

What is SEO?
Search engine optimization is about organically optimizing a website on a search engine to get the best possible placement within the organic ranking for one or several search terms. It is also about the targeted optimization of the SERP, which generally promises an improvement in the click-through rate.
Search engine optimization, or SEO for short, includes all organic (i.e. free and natural) optimization measures that can be taken to move a website further up the rankings of a search engine (Google, Bing, etc.).
Various studies have so far shown that over 99% of organic clicks on Google are spread across the first ten search results. Only 0.9% of the clicks are in the lower positions. That alone makes it clear how important it is to rank among the top 10 on Google in order to attract as many visitors as possible to the site.
The percentage distribution also varies greatly among the top 10. While 60% of the organic clicks are in first place of the organic search results (SERPs), only 15% remain for position 2.
SEM vs. SEO vs. SEA
You have certainly heard these three abbreviations in connection with search engines – but what do they actually mean?
I already explained SEO (= Search Engine Optimization) above – so let’s concentrate on SEM and SEA now.
SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing and SEA for Search Engine Advertising. SEO and SEA together are the components of SEM.
While SEO describes the organic and sustainable but lengthy optimization of a website, SEA stands for the quick and short-term, but chargeable optimization of the rankings of certain keywords in the paid search results (ads). So SEA is an independent discipline that I don’t currently offer. But I know some very capable SEA specialists who I can pass them on to if necessary.
It can make a lot of sense to combine the sustainable power of SEO with the short-term success of SEA.
While it can sometimes take several months for the measures of a thorough search engine optimization to become noticeable, the effects of search engine advertising are directly noticeable – but disappear immediately as soon as you stop paying for them.
So you can bridge the waiting time until SEO bears the first fruits with the help of SEA.
